How did life on earth come about in the first place? Was it the result of specific design activities by an omnipotent, omniscient creator or did it occur by a fortunate combination of chemicals and undirected natural processes?

‘Anyone who tells you that he or she knows how life started on the earth some 3.45 billion years ago is a fool or a knave. Nobody knows.’ Says Stuart Kauffman, an American theoretical biologist and complex systems researcher who studies the origin of life on Earth of the state of current scientific knowledge on how life originated.

According the geneticist Michael Denton the break between the non-living and the living world ‘represents the most dramatic and fundamental of all the discontinuities of nature. 'Between a living-cell and the most highly ordered non-biological systems, such as a crystal or a snowflake, there is a chasm as vast and absolute as it is possible to conceive.’ Even the tiniest of bacterial cells weighing less than a trillionth of a gram, is ‘a veritable microminiaturized factory containing thousands of exquisitely designed pieces of intricate molecular machinery, made up altogether of 100 thousand million atoms, for more complicated than any machine built by man and absolutely without parallel in the non-living world’.

In order to grasp some of the fundamental issues involved in thinking about the origins of life we must consider one of the greatest scientific discoveries of all time: the nature and meaning of the information-bearing DNA. DNA is contained in the nucleaus of a cell and stores the instructions needed to build proteins in functional organisms and to pass on genetic traits to offspring. Like a computer hard disk, DNA conatins the database of information and the programme to produce a specified product. Everyone of the 10 to 100 triliion cells in the human body conatins a database larger than the Encyclopedia Briticannica.

Empirical science has the potential to confirm the existence of an intelligent Mind which is capable of design but it cannot identify the Mind's nature or identity. If there is an intelligent Mind behind the universe and if that Mind intends us to be here, the really big question is: Why are we here? What is the purpose of our existence?

It is not unreasonable to consider that one of the major reasons we have minds is not just so that we can explore the fascinating world we are part of but also that we should be able to understand the Mind that has given us this world.

Now we know people are capable of giving expression to the thoughts of our minds and communicating them to others. It would therefore be very surprising if the Mind from which we derived should be any less capable of self-expression and communication than we are. Is there any serious and credible evidence that that Mind has communicated with our world?
